Top Ways to Spend 100 Calories

Top Ways to Spend 100 CaloriesWell, after weeks of holiday eating, we're all paying a lot more attention to the calories we eat every day. Our thoughts now often turn to getting the maximal enjoyment and satisfaction from the fewest calories. Where to begin?

Are there really some shortcuts to enjoying the tastes we want while saving calories at the same time? I think we can.

Why 100 calories? It's not really a scientific fact, but it's easy to do the mental math, and those calories are enough to satisfy as a snack. Here are some of my favorites. I'd love to hear some of yours!

Here's what 100 calories will get you, with the best choice first, followed by an option which should be chosen with caution. It's not the worst, but viewed as a special occasion choice.

If you want 100 calories in starch:
Max your calories with a medium baked potato (fist sized), scooped and fluffed with some chives. (Or, about 12 fast-food size french fries.)

If you want 100 calories in protein:
Max your calories with 3-4 slices of roasted chicken breast, without the skin. (Or, about ¼ cup of chicken salad.)

If you want 100 calories of a salty/crunchy snack:
Max your calories with 10 whole dill pickles. (Or, about 8-10 potato chips.)

If you want 100 calories of a dairy product:
Max your calories with a cup of 0% fat strained yogurt, plain and adding your own berries. (Or, about ½ cup of fruit-flavored yogurt.)

If you want 100 calories of a condiment:
Max your calories with 2 cups of tomato salsa. (Or, about 7 tablespoons of ketchup.)

If you want 100 calories of fruit:
Max your calories with a whole fresh fruit. (Or, about 6-8 ounces of 100% juice.)

If you want 100 calories of chocolate:
Max your calories with a single serve, 100-calorie candy bar, and eat the whole thing. (Or, about ½ or less of a regular candy bar...hard to eat only part!)

I really like the Soy Pria bar that is chocolate & Mint(tastes like a girl scout thin mint) It is slightly over 100 cals @ 110 cal per bar.

Fudge Cycles are good they are about 75 caleries a bar.

Pop Secret Homestyle Popcorn in 100 calorie bags......makes you feel like you are getting more snack for your attack :)

Posted by Michelle on January 09 at 10:31am

who is going to eat 10 pickles or 2 cups of salsa with a spoon as a snack??
both of those options are extremely high in sodium and will probably send you to the hospital if you consumed that regularly. how about 4000 packets of soy sauce? that sounds yummy.

Posted by mary on January 09 at 01:57pm

you can eat carrots and celeri as much as you like.

Posted by christine on January 10 at 09:23am

I agree with Mary..... 10 pickles is a bit much and 2 cups of salsa is great for cooking but needs a bag of chips for general eating! LOL I prefer popcorn for the crispy/salty taste and get cruch as an added bonus.

Posted by Allie on January 10 at 01:45pm

I agree about the pickles, maybe one! You could have half the baked potato with 1 cup of salsa. I also really enjoy those 100 calorie snack packs, pretty expensive but do the trick.

I have a bit of trouble with emaciated Natalie Morales and the ever shrinking Hoda Kotbe telling me how to eat properly. Ann is pretty tiny also. Bad role models, blatantly hypocritical. Healthy individuals are easy to spot. As for the 100 calorie snack...A juicy nectarine w/fat free cottage cheese, a whole wheat (fiber filled!)tortilla with lettuce, a lite smear of cream cheese, a sprinkling of shaved oven roasted turkey breast (from the deli)for a minimalist wrap (grind on the pepper!); celery with cc and pepper and thyme or a thin coating of pb; soup...all with a sparkling water before hand....

I totally agree with Susie about Natalie Morales or even Ann Curry. Every time they have a food segment you can tell they about have to gag themselves to try someones recipie on the show. They look like they have to eat poison!! And whats with Ann Curry going off about crying babies in the crowd the other day - she was acting like some big DIVA!!!!

I have trouble following the '100 calorie rule'. For most foods, how do you know if you're actually eating 100 calories or not? I like to find a balance between good/bad calories instead, and a lot healthier in the long run.

I picked up this book "The South Beach Diet Quick and Easy Cookbook" to find easy and healthy recipes that teach you to use the right carbs and the right fats. I've tried many of the receipes and, and most have been great. Even my children like the recipes.

Other people reviewed the book and had similar reactions to it as me:

I do not think that you give some of your chefs or people with ideas very much time to explain their products. You are always saying we are running out of time. I think you need to spend more time on these segments and maybe not have as many people on your show. Also, at times everybody is talking at one time and is very confusing on what is going on. I do love your show though and would not miss it. At times, I tape it and buzz through it.

natalie morales is a marathon runner... i think she is healthy, strong and very very admirable!

The 90 calorie pack snacks are amazing for curbing a case of the munchies. I keep them on hand in my office.

A great snack for under 100 Calories that fills you up and is a good source of dairy is the on the go Knudsen Cottage Cheese. You can add a 1/2 cup of fruit too and probably be a little over 100 calories. Great energy boost for those who are stuck in cubicles all day!

I don't mind that the host are skinny, but think you are not allowing enough time for the chefs who are constantly being interupted by them. Especially Al. He thinks he's Wolfgang Puck or Emeril now. Some of the chefs seem pretty frustrated that they did all that work and don't even get to show it all.

Posted by Mary on January 12 at 12:38am

I hope the producers read what other people sent. Do the producers watch a tape of the show after it is aired?? They will see how eveyone talks at one time, & rude they are to the guests cooking or demonstrating. I love the show, but I do tape it so that I can use closed caption to determine what was said.

If you are still suggesting some great snack ideas, how about 15 slices of turkey pepperoni for 70 calories, a sugar free fudge bar, or a reduced fat string cheese.
I totally agree with the comments about Al. He is constantly showing off and trying to get a laugh especially with some of the guests doing cooking segments.
I also think you rush through some really great segments on health and cooking. Cut down the amount of your segments and get your anchors to quit interrupting them so much with questions and comments. I still love your show and will always be a Today show fan.

Here are a couple of low cal snacks that are pretty tasty:

Crush up a graham cracker square and put it in the bottom of a small dish.
Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup fat free vanilla or banana pudding.
Add a small amount of fruit(optional).
Top with fat free whipped topping.
(You need to choose your measurements according to a calorie count that will work for your diet.)

Or: Put a tablespoon fat free whipped topping between two chocolate graham cracker squares and freeze. It's really good!

I don't think we can criticize the hosts of the today show regarding their weight. We have no idea if they have personal struggles to maintain their weight. I would imagine in that business, maintaining your weight is a must. We all may do the same thing if our jobs depended on it or if we were in front of millions of viewers daily.

I also wish Today would allow more time for important health topics and give less time for stories such as Brittney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc... (gossip)

Its 200 calories instead of 100 but my favorite healthy snack is 3 tablespoons of hummus dip with as much cut up carrots or celery as I want. I also agree on the turkey pepperoni, it tastes just the same as reg w/much less calories and fat

i have stopped watching the today show because of all of the yelling/screaming by visitors. the last thing i want in the morning is to here people screaming. why don't they lower the sound when they are outside?

Your show is a greatlt respectable and highly informative program. Ilove the cast and they're character and personalities click so well. However, I agree with many of the comments regarding food segments. If they're to promote health and well-being, we need more time to hear and absorb the info. presented. they are being interrupted way to much, and you can see the frustration in the chef's faces. mMany of us, in a scuffle of things may be taking in the program just by listening without being able to see every moment on the screen. So make every moment count please!

Someone wasn't paying attention to the video of the show's segment on the pickles and salsa idea. She specifically mentioned "not to say you're going to eat 10 pickles necessarily," it's to show you how to enjoy something salty and crunchy instead. She also suggested enjoying 1 c. of salsa on a baked potato, that's reasonable and tasty!

Posted by tanya on January 23 at 11:51am

My favorites are a tub of sugar-free, fat-free flavored yogurt and 100 calories of dried fruit. Neither requires advanced preparation, and both can be consumed while at work.

Posted by Lynn on January 24 at 11:49am

The today show is becoming as bad as The View. Everyone talks at once and no one listens. That can be annoying.

Posted by Jean on January 27 at 09:53am

I so agree about the Today Show going down. "We're so skinny, we're so skinny! Just dont eat like us and you'll be skinny too. Look at the picture of this disgusting fatty who is skinny now like us.. yeaaaaahhh skinny club!!" And Ann is really gettin on my nerves. Today (again) she talked over her guests repeatedly (Drew Pinskey et al) and it's just getting to be too much. And the hyperventilating when she does the news...it gives me a panic attack to hear her breathing like that.

Posted by mandy on January 28 at 04:46pm

The Today Show has gone down the TUBES,they all talk over themselves and I think thats pretty rude for people that are suppose to be educated..I guess they were never tought manners. And whats her name Viere get rid of her and the rest and get new people with MAt and AL...

I hate to be the ringer of bad news, but my ideal snack,is plain yogurt, with some crush graham crakers or cheerio w/ any fruits, with a bottle of icey lemon flavor water,,or green apples and mangoes with any salad, and take some Vita D when theres no sun outside during the winter, for the last 22 yrs living up in canada, and am not starving yet!oh and guess what?when you eat after 9:PM, promiss yo boo some sweetness if he come out for a walk for 20 min in the closest park around your block, then head home sweet home to sleep.

Posted by rashida on February 09 at 04:01pm

I agree there is way to much talking over the guests and each other. the other day I totally missed the important part because some ones mother failed to teach good manners when they were a child. However I do like that the people on your show, they do seem so real, unlike Katie Curic, (I liked her at first)then they made her over into some one who seems so plastic. I love the health segments, do not hurry them so. thanks for caring about us the people

I do love the today show, but there is a bit of a rush when it comes to the chefs. It's usually at the end of the show and Al does think that he's Emeril, but that's okay. Loved his show on the food network.
