Let's Get Started

Welcome to my blog! This is the first entry, and I look forward to beginning a long and wonderful relationship with you, me, and good health. Information about diet and nutrition is everywhere, and it seems like we are bombarded 24/7 with conflicting information. From the TV news, to the Web, to newspapers and health magazines, to celebrity plans - it is really hard to figure it all out. I even find it challenging at times. Research changes so quickly it seems that what's "healthy" one day is shown to be "bad" the next. No wonder we are all confused. I want to help you navigate the roles that not only food and nutrition play in health promotion, but how your attitudes and actions count for a lot in making this all work. The same goes for physical activity and good medical care. From apples to zinc - and everything in-between, I'll separate myth from fact in any diet, nutrition, and health-related topic of interest to you. From food safety to weight loss - no topic is off limits.

While many of my entries will be tied to my weekly segments on the Today Show, I'll also be commenting on hot topics in the news, to help you sort through the hype, and get accurate, bottom line information. Even more importantly, I want to hear from you - to see what's on your mind, what questions you'd like to have answered, or just your views on a particular topic. I'm looking forward to some lively debates!

I'd like to throw out a question to you: With the busy lives we all lead, do you think it's possible to meet all of your nutritional needs only with foods, without taking a daily multi vitamin/mineral supplement? Let me know what you think.

Hi! Just a quick comment. I am positive that you can't get enough nutrients from our food today. Even the government has acknowledged that a few years ago.

A person would have to eat totally organic food and be away from all the stresses of life and the carcinagens and all the oxidation in our world; he would have to be in a bubble.

No mention about soy and it's possible effect on breast cancer? I've heard conflicting theories.

I don't understand why people who promote soy products fail inform the pregnant and breast feeding population that soy products can have a deadly affect on their baby or unborn child. soy is a great plant although it is used as a filler and sbstitute in higher quality foods. how about leaving the peanut oil in peanut butter because its all about healthy right. soy is also an unhealthy product. Monosodium glutamate, MSG a salt used for flavor enhancing and preservitive. in short soy can cause death if unknowingly consumed by someone who is allergic, and many are allergic or simply can't tolerate soy. and I'm not sure but soy is not a complete source of protien. where's the B-12 that humans must have? overall a terrible report!!!

I believe in vitamins and always take multi vitamin/mineral and also calcium. I think it is possible to get all you need from food but only if you eat healthy all the time, which I don't.

I think anyone who is promoting soy should go to www.thyroid.org. Soy is not as safe as it is being promoted. It can cause thyroid cancer and proving to cause cancer. They need to add other ingredients to cover up the bitter taste from soy. We are hearing about more people having cancer today then there was in the past. And I can't help but feel with the different additives and preseratives like soy are the cause for some of these cancers. As listed above there are a lot of people who are allergic to soy and with soy hidden in our food and other products like make-up, lotions, soaps, etc... It makes it very hard for people with allergies to soy to not come in contact with soy. Back in 2006 the American Heart Association stated the Soy has No Significant Effect on Cholesterol. So, how can she claim it helps your cholesterol. Soy is a cheap filler that is being used in our food as a preserative. Everything that I was able to find and read about soy, I feel soy is part of the cause of a lot of our health problems

I have been vegan for over 10 years and have met loads of vegans and never met one who suffers from lack of B12 but have met several meat eaters who suffer from a B12 deficiency. Don't take any supplements like super lecithins unless you are advised to by a reliable health professional as they are a waste of money.
