Vitamin Supplements: Help or Hype?

Vitamins and minerals support good health - right? Yes, that's a fact, and deficiencies can be harmful to your health. In the perfect world, all of our nutrients would come from the variety of foods we eat. Choosing a colorful plate rich in fruits and vegetables is a lifestyle must-do. But we don't live in the perfect world. So, should you be taking a daily vitamin/mineral supplement? I'm asked this question all the time. Does it keep you healthy? Prevent disease? Do mega-doses work better?

A new report from the Archives of Internal Medicine adds further support to other recent studies that vitamin supplementation did not lower the risk for diseases like heart disease and cancer. This had been previously shown for single vitamin use, including vitamin A, C, and E.

As a nation, we've started to look at vitamin supplements with a lot of magical thinking, a magic bullet approach to both good health and disease prevention. While a daily vitamin/mineral supplement containing 100% of daily requirements (RDI) can be good insurance for a well-rounded diet, we should not view this as a substitute for consuming real food. Plus, the other aspects of a healthy lifestyle - physical activity, weight management, stress management, are all important to reducing disease risk.

Here's my bottom line: A daily 100% DV vitamin/mineral supplement (not mega-dosing) can provide insurance that you're meeting most daily requirements based on national guidelines. Look at this as a support to maintaining good health, but not lowering disease risk (that's where the controversy is). But when it comes to vitamins one size does not fit all and you'll need to talk with your doctor if you take prescription medications or have food restrictions and food allergies.

I have been wondering about this for sometime now. I didn't want to be throwing money way but also felt they were necessary as an added health benefit. I've tried Super Nutrition and Nutrilite. I have my daughter (9yr) take some daily as well. Is that even necessary? We do eat at least one fruit and veggie every day.

I have finally learned that vitamins help. My daughter told me I needed to get on her program of vitamins. I am now taking the Mlis Daily Essentials Calcium, Organic Flax Seed Oil, Evening Primrose, Vital, Daily, Vit D and Probiotic. I am 64 and I feel so much healthier with this daily regimen of vitamins. I feel very sluggish if I forget to take them. I also drink the Chocolate Shake that Mlis recommends. It is full of daily vitamins. Love it.

I just started taking complex b last week. In that short time, it's softened my skin, which has been scaley my entire life, killed my dandruff and my insane cramps. I'm sold. If it does that much on the outside, how much is it helping without me noticing?

Yesterday, I added a multivitamin, odorless fish oil, and slow fe to the list of vitamins.

I think vitamins are every bit worth the money and think it's foolish to think we are getting what we need from the nutritionally depleted food we eat. We should be eating 6-10 fruits and veggies a day and I would guess that most people are not which is only adding to the problem.

Besides if vitamins weren't worth anything then why do the food companies "enrich" their food with supplements? Actually I am still trying to figure out why they have to strip the vitamins out in the first place only to "enrich" it with an inferior quality supplement.

I'm taking a regular daily vitamin, flaxseed oil and vitamin D/calcium. I was told all I really needed or rather the most important was D/CA, so therefore when these run out, that's all I will take. I'm 63

like to take vitamins everyday (good complex of all sorts of B and Minerals) , also BioQnon daily since I am getting older (60 now) , 1/2 good fish oil tablets a day and Vit C tablets and then also a Glucosamine tablet since my knees are hurting from arthritus ... am very glad I can spare the money for these! I eat varied fruits and vegetarian food, go out daily , have no car and love to swim weekly and do everything still on my old bike !

vitamin D with calcium lowers blood pressure; also, fish oil is more beneficial for arthritis than glucosamine.

I don't care about personal opinions. We need to see the scientific evidence from studies carefully done. I think too many vitamins can create problems, also can be a waste of money.

I take a multivitamin everday along with calcium, fish oil, iron and vitamin D. I have also changed to a vegan diet. I have had RA for 5 years and am symptom free.

I take one Flexcin tablet three times a day to treat osteoarthritis. I don't need to take Mobic anymore.

I take a stress ease vitamin and fish oil supplement every day. I find they keep my energy level up and my skin and joints moving better.

After breast cancer I felt tired and worn out. I asked my doctor if she could prescribe me prenatal vitamins. I have been taking them since. I work full time and have a full life. I believe the prenatal vitamins help me stay healthier thus achieving a fuller life.

I have Multiple Sclerosis. Beyond several medicines prescribed by my MS Specialist, I take a MegaVitamin + Minerals (in that same pill). I also take Calcium and also a DHEA Pill and an over-the-counter IBS pill. And I give myself a 44mg Rebif shot 3 times a week. My MS is RRMS. Exercise is very important for me to do every day! I am 28 years old and in fairly good health, at least that's how I see it!!

Oh!, I forgot to say that my Dr. has me using Provigil to "perk me up"....when I complained to him that I felt tired and dragged-out. It's expensive, there's no generic yet to get a lower $$. But it works! I'm alert now, all day. Take it after 12:00 noon and you won't sleep well.

I take One-a-Day multivitamin, B12, and a Vit-C supplement. I definetely think it helps. B12 keeps me from crashing all day(its the same as whats in those Energy drinks). Vit-C def helps. The proof is I have gone two winters without any colds or flus. I used to get sick three or four times a season. I am a C-freak as the commercial says. I have no idea if the multi-vitamin does anything but my docs keep saying I should be taking one. I may be an example of the placebo-effect but they seem to be helping me and I don't see any harm. Thanks!

i start taking supplement like 2 month now ,and i think it is very good ,i can feel it ,i advice everybody to plant in his own land all the food he should eat ,make his own bread ,cook in send dishes,no microwaves ,if he cannot then there is no choice :VITAMINS. i cannot truth the market .

To Brenda Lee: I am taking the acai berry supplement and I also am taking synthroid for my thyroid. I love the acai berry supplement and I can't live without it. It has helped with my digestive problems, insomnia, and has given me lots of energy.I say go for it!

I strongly beleive in supplements. I take Multi every now and then vitamines E, C, B complex, D which is good for cancer, Omega 3 Collagen,Chontroitin, Hyaluronic AcidGlucosamine, CoQ10,Cinnamon,Lemon and honey (no white sugar) L-Glutathion, L-Carnitine, Alpha Lipoic Acid. Now these may sound like many things and I might not take everything everyday, I do use them for different things other than medication, unless the med is severely needed. I do rely on the suppliements and have done the research for each of there specific needs. They work slow some work fast but they do work

I agre that taking vitamins should not serve as a substitute for healthy. Dietary supplements are exactly that - to supplement the nutrtiona gaps in our diet. Moreover, we cannot get everything our bodies need from food alone I take a high quality, complete multivitamin, minerals and antioxidants. I think of them as my personal health insurance. Bottom line, elying on foods which are nutrient-deficient is not going to help maintain good health. Supplementing with multivitamns is helps reduce the negative effects of oxidative stress on the cells of our bodies which otherwise can lead to chronic degenerative disease.

Yes I take daily lecithin,Bcomplex,pure fish oil,vitamin C,Calcium ,Mag and zinc.I am 62yrs young and still alive and kicking!!!
However too much of everything is bad for the health.In moderation is best.

I am on alot of medication for nerve damage in my head, so I have to be careful what I take. I do take Omega 3 chewables, and B complex which I was told might help repair the damage. It was suggested that I take milk thistle for my liver because of all the medication I take. Haven't tried it yet. I do take the acai berry pills, and have tried the Isagenix shakes and drinks, which I find have left me more alert instead of groggy from my medication. Expensive but worth it in my opinion. I gained weight on the medication and since starting the Isagenix, have lost 12 lbs. and lots of inches. It is vitamins and minerals, and protein in the shakes. I also have a protein shake twice a day.

I take a senior multivitamin and fish oil capsules. My doctor recommended 3000 iu of Vitamin D for bones, but I'm afraid of taking too much (articles on the Web say that 2000 is the upper level).

It's amazing to me how many people don't question the pharmaceuticals they take, but will be so cautionary about their vitamins. Maybe they out to look up the statistics and medical studies about how many deaths are caused a year by prescription drugs. Also, there is a big difference in vitamins purchased through a conventional store and a real health food store, so maybe to find out the basics and stop listening to the propaganda.

Yes, I take four(4) omega E fish oil supplements (1000 mg.), 2 Red Yeast rice tablets (1200 mg.) and one (1) mature multi-vitamin supplement daily.

I'm wondering about "Resveterol", the new supplement which all the TV doctors are touting. I wonder if it is worth it. It is certainly more expensive than any of the run-of-the-mill vitamins.
