Tips for Choosing a New Weight Loss Plan
It's January, and you know what that means: New diets galore. We are surrounded by promotions for the "best" diet and it's easy to give in to the "magical thinking" that somehow, this will be the year for successful weight loss. But how to choose a lifestyle plan that can work for you? While the basics of eating less and moving more are always the foundation, there are many paths to the same destination of successful weight loss and long term maintenance.
Here are my 5 top tips to consider when selecting a fresh program. What are some of yours?
1. Evidence Based Plans: Backed up by scientific studies, not only personal stories.
2. Strategies to manage "hunger": How to feel fuller on fewer calories, and avoid deprivation.
3. Regular physical activity: A realistic way to keep moving for the long term.
4. A support system: Ways to stay connected to your plan is a must-have.
5. Budget friendly: "Investing" in yourself in a way that supports both your wallet and your waistline.
So, how can you evaluate your needs? I am a firm believer that "one size does not fit all" when it comes to weight loss. Most people don't have access to a major medical center weight loss program, or private consultations. Diet books can be a sound resource, but sometimes don't translate to everyday life.
For someone looking for one-stop lifestyle shopping, I have been quite impressed with the continuing development of Weight Watchers, now launching their new Momentum Program. A reliable presence for more than 40 years, Weight Watchers is consistently highly rated (among the top four plans by Consumer Reports in 2007) and for good reason. This is one company that really adapts its plans based on both consumer feedback, and emerging information in weight loss science. The new Momentum Program specifically responds to the key question every consumer asks as part of a plan: how can I tackle my physical hunger? What I especially like is the ability to participate on your terms, and tailor the plan to your needs.
The addition of what are called "filler foods" (those high water and fiber foods keeping you fuller on fewer calories) are an updated part of the plan. The combination of WW member experiences and scientific studies has produced a combination of strategies that might be just what you're looking for. Of particular benefit is that lack of time is not a deterrent here. You can participate in the traditional meeting groups or on-line to suit your own schedule. It's an easy and convenient way to stay connected without breaking the bank. While there are fees involved, they are modest, and importantly, you're not required to purchase special foods "necessary" to boost your weight loss.

When you say Strategies to manage "hunger" - how to feel fuller on fewer calories, and avoid deprivation.
Does this relate to the energy density of food? Fewer calories but bigger sized portions of food compared to foods high in fat and sugar.
Apples are bigger than cookies but have less calories so you feel fuller quicker.
I like your Top 5 tips especially 3 - physical activity. For those of us with desk jobs we need to be extra conscious of fitting in lots of movement on a daily basis.
I usually ask myself if I can walk rather than drive, take the stairs rather than the elevator, park further from the entrance and so on.
I have adopted the 10,000 steps a day program. It is amazing how it makes you move! I am a WW baby, literally, I was on WW the first time when I was 12 years old. It is the best program around for the long haul as far as keeping weight off and learning how to eat the right foods. I hate the word diet. My acronym for Diet is: DECIDE IT ENDS TODAY. We have the power. Lets go and get healthy in 2009!
Forgot to mention that wearing a pedometer is essential to the 10,000 step program. Just 30 minutes on a tread mill walking at 3.5 achived 4,ooo steps! When waling with a friend it takes 1 hour to get the same steps but there are other benefits to that as well if you have the time. Enjoy the journey...
I agree with the top 5 tips.
I, myself, really enjoy Jenny Craig. It meets all of the 5 tips mentioned above and incorporates volumetrics into its program. Volumetrics was the #1 weight loss method listed in consumer reports. And the convenience of the meals makes it easy. I also like the 1-1 support I get from my consultant.
I've found that a high fiber diet combined with lean proteins and a extra helping of fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber and in water has helped me a ton. Plus it makes you feel cleaner and better.
I am currently doing a weight loss program
through our Medical Centre and since July last year I have lost 25.9kgs and I just eat healthy and I am active and yes I have an amazing support system of family and friends and that makes all the difference to me. My Healthy Weight Counselor plus my support people give me so much encouragement I am very lucky to have them all.
I enjoy all the high fiber, low cal foods, but I need to sleep at night! Sometimes I am plenty "full" but am missing someting, and I find myself (and my wife) getting up at 2 am to eat a peanut butter sandwich--then we fall fast asleep! If we do not, we will be up all night long. Dieting is not good for sleeping.
hi i am up to weight loss as well, since last two years. i have tried dieting many times but left it in middle but from last 7 - 8 months i have been trying to eat healthy foods and i do exercise 4-5 days a week. but still i see no changes at all, neither at scale or measurement. i am not too overweight but yes i need to lose around 10 lbs. everyone says it should not be hard to lose just 10 lbs. i dont eat fatty foods such as oilyfood, fast food, crisps, icecreams, fizzy drinks etc. but still cant lose weight. please help.
I agree with Mike about diets and good sleep not going together. I do pretty well eating healthy during the day but cannot stop eating 2 or 3 hours before bed.
If I don't have something before trying to sleep, I lie awake for hours. Warm milk is supposed to be good but I don't drink milk. So I try to have something like a low fat yogurt and a cup of tea.
I started my weight loss program January 6, 2008. I have lost almost 75 pounds. I changed my eating habits where I eat healthy and less and I incorporated walking into my program. For those of you who have problems sleeping and staying asleep you may want to incorporate walking or some type of physical activity along with the dieting if you have not already. It really works for me.
I've been dieting it seems forever, but really it's not long, and so far I've lost 56 lbs. I find that Valerian taken last thing at night is good to get to sleep, or St. John's Wort, if you're not on any other medication. Otherwise, try cocoa! It really works!! A cup of cocoa with cheese on 2 crackers and I'm out like a light! Good luck everyone.
HI am Devi, am trying to loose 3-5kg since 2 years now, but the scale show no improvement.... I eat more healthy, stop all oily food am doing more exercise, with a walking program.. but still nothing, i read a book where it says that for women on stress, while dieting or exercising, the body uses carbohydrates instead of fats and stores up the fatty acids for latter uses!!!!!
Hi am Adeela I have to loose at least 10 kg my current weight is 80kg am 37yrs old from Pakistan plz tell me easy way to loose weight I can not work out cause of my knee problem only I have one option less diet send me plz some tips and easy diet plan that I can understant easily.
Although ww is a good program it is spendy. it fees are high. I myself do tops and also some online support like sparkpeople.com. But I do agree with the 5 .
I currently attend ww and love it. It is helping me stay on track. It is the healthiest plan around in my opinion.
I have lost 40 pounds doing the LA Weight Loss program. Yes, it is a bit spendy, although it is only half of what I paid when I started. They have specific guidelines for your health and then compared with your beginning and goal weight. Then there are about 9 plans that they choose based on your information. It is very helpful, and the counselors are great! They incorporate all of the above, as well - healthy eating, drinking lots of water, exercising 30 minutes per day, etc. Also, I look to SparkPeople.com for recipes, but I feel that the actual meals they come up with are too starch-based - not enough protein and vegetables.
Everyone post their questions? but where are the answers?
Wait I am doing the same thing? Who is going to answer me?
There are now some excellent online health and fitness centers out there that give you all the tools and behavior modification you need to succeed with a sensible and safe weight loss program. I found one that has free content by registered dietitians and other experts with the latest information on any fitness-related subject you want. So much of it is common sense that we have forgotten in the maze of products and information that is available today. I especially enjoyed the eating style makeover. See what you think.
