Beware of Unhealthy Ways to Lose Weight
Losing weight is a major health plus. But who has time to wait for the results? While we all know it took many weeks and months to put on those extra pounds, we'd love to lose them... like yesterday! We'd all like to believe that quick weight loss is safe, effective, and effortless. That's why all of those ads sound so convincing. "Detox and cleanse away your body fat" was the headline of one pamphlet I picked up recently. Smiling, thin women, in bikinis, with Chicklet-teeth apparently had used this "amazing" plan. From celebrities to your next door neighbors, many people are turning to products and processes like detoxifying liquids, cleansing diets, fasts, and colonics.
But what you don't know can hurt your health. It's time to take a closer look at unhealthy ways to lose weight and why you want to avoid them.
Fasts and extreme food restrictions can be health damaging if done without medical supervision. The "detox" described for many products can lead to fatigue, cramping, and dehydration. Our bodies already have plenty of natural "detox" tools, like the liver, skin, and lungs! This goes for semi-fasts like the popular "Master Cleanse", which limits calories in a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper to about 500 calories per day. While a day or two of fasting is not a health negative for most healthy people (think of the days of religious fasting), these are harmful plans for an extended period of time.
Many products to "detoxify" and "cleanse" contain herbal substances that can put you at risk, as these supplements are not tested nor regulated by the FDA. Plus, they might interact with other medications you are taking. Remember that you're not usually consuming the herbal plant itself (as brewed in a tea, for example), but an active ingredient extracted from the plant where there is no guarantee of safety, purity, or efficacy during this process, when contamination can occur. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before trying any of these. Plus, avoid products claiming weight loss without lifestyle change, and look for a website and 800 number to call for further information about purity of the compound. Be an informed consumer!
Avoid "colonics", the explanation of which, at first glance, seems to make sense and fits in with "cleansing". The ads claim to rid your intestinal tract of harmful bacteria and other matter. The problem is that healthy gut bacteria are also flushed out, and often salt and water balance is impaired over the short term.
While you might not experience cramping, fatigue, or dehydration after using one of these methods, at least recognize that whatever immediate "weight loss" you experienced is likely only fluid elimination. Like other "quick weight loss" promises, weight returns almost immediately, unless a solid lifestyle plan is in place.
It's hard to fight the quick fix for weight loss, but watch out—your health may depend on it. When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, slow and steady wins the race. Small changes made every day do pay off. The first step is patience.
What do you think? Are you willing to do anything to lose weight quickly? I'd love to know your thoughts if you've tried some of these unhealthy way to lose weight. Did they work for you? Did you get sick? We'd all like to learn from your experiences!

I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun. I can stick to a diet very well, but nothing works. I hate it. I've had it so much that I'm almost ready to turn anorexic. Not good!
Weight Watchers works! It is so good at teaching you the correct portion sizes. It is amazing how much we get used to eating of one thing and the portion should really be half of what we usually eat.
Try it!
The only weight loss that has truely worked for me over the years is Weight Watchers. I tries low carb and lost but gained it all back plus. Everyone please learn from my mistake on the Acai berry. DON"T purchase the free samples. I was charges over $88.00 two days after I ordered the sample. I am fighting to get my money back, but when I call they put you on hold for at least 20 minutes hoping you hang up. They pills of course do not work and i am out almost $100.00 including the sample fee. They are all rip offs
The Curves Weight Management Plan is fantastic. I love it. No cravings and no hunger. Just a good sensible plan that will teach me how to eat for the rest of my life. Very satisfying, and I am losing slowly and steadily. (I am 58 years old, btw)
Slimming world is the answer for me -I have tried WW and RC but neither worked for me but SW did
I HAVE TRIED IT ALL FROM DIET PILLS, TO DETOX AND HAVE WASTED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND THE BEST ONE THAT I HAVE GONE BACK TO THAT GETS ME RESULTS IS WEIGHT WATCHERS. NO GIMMICS OR HASSLES IT JUST TEACHES YOU A WAY OF LIFE TO MAKE BETTER CHOICES AND HEALTHIER EATING HABITS. GIVE IT A TRY...
Listen Bay. NutriSystem WILL work. IF you don't cheat, the weight will come off even without exercise. I know because I lost 33# on it. It re-teaches you about portion size. To lose weight, you only have to eat less, write it down and see how much you eat.
I have tried everything & even twice I was anorexic, now I have found something great.mega t green tea pills fat burner plus burns belly fat,i love it,My tummy almost flat, plus I do yoga,I love my yoga,I wear all the neat clothes & I just feel great,so try it
from Iowa
try south beach diet if you have the money to affort it.....
I tried Oolong tea - it acted as a diaretic, my blood potassium levels dropped, and I ended up in the ER with what I thought was a heart attack and or possibly a stroke, as it turned out, a dangerously low potassium level mimics these symptoms, I have a preexisting heart condition, so the effects of what I thought was an all natural (good for the heart) tea almost ended my life! What did I learn? All natural doesn't mean safe for all! Ask your doctor first, eat healthy food , less of it, more often ,and move more! Diet, when you take away the t is the word Die, I almost did , it's not worth it!
I have tried the detox diet several times and it has worked for me. I go to a nutritionist who gives me the diet plans and measures fat, blood pressure, BMI, etc...I'm on the detox diet again.
Are there different considerations if one has many pounds to lose? (like 85-100)
I use the Isagenix Nutritional Cleanse and Fat Burning System which is above all a full body cleanse (required to help the body rid itself of impurities so it can perform the way it should). In this day and age and with the foods most people eat, our bodies are subjected to toxins from the air, water and food supply. Nutritional cleansing of the main filters and the blood system are imperative to have the body function as the miracle it can be. Isagenix ingredients are from all natural and mostly organic foods. One of the side effects doing this cleanse system is fat loss that is maintained after the cleansing process. Isagenix is now known as the World Leader in Nutritinal Cleansing. It works and it lasts. I recommend it to my clients as a safe and no compromise nutritionally sound cleanse that gets rid of fat (where most toxins reside) and provide nutritional support to maintain and build lean mass. I provide complimentary coaching with the system for the best results. Darlenehannan@rogers.com.Email me for mor
Taislim is a great product. It is made from the goji berry. Safe and all natural. Use with exercise and a healthy diet. Check it out on the freelife website.
I was also a victim of ACAI BERRY... They never explained that you have to call within 14 days of trying the product so you won't be charge the 80 dollars. I've tried calling to speak with someone that I can actually understand their language!!!NO LUCK!! I have just joined the health club and met with a personal trainer in a week or two... Wish me luck!!!! DON'T GET RIPPED OFF BY ACAI BERRY, DON'T TRY IT....
Well, I did have trouble losing weight for years, but I finally found something that worked out for me. I kept a journal of what I ate, when I ate, and how many calories it was.
I stuck to the serving size, gave myself a cheat meal once a week, and slowly replaced what I was eating with sensible low-glycemic choices, ie Oatmeal with splenda and blueberries as opposed to cereal. I limited myself to 1200(ish) calories, then increased it by 100 when I approached my desired weight.
I started off as 347 pounds, and now I'm 210, 8 months later. I'm always eating, always snacking. I knew I wouldn't stick with anything that makes me starve, so being content all day was the trick.
I reccomend the raw diet lifestyle. You basically increase the amount of raw fruit and veg and eat lots of nuts and you can even eat raw chocolate. The theory behind this diet is that cooking food destroys vital nutrients. I love this diet as u can eat as much fruit and veg and even enjoy naturally sweet treats. Yoga and fresh air helps 2! (:
I meant to say that I increased it by increments of 100 when I approached my desired weight. I wanted to ease my body into homeostasis without giving myself too little or too many calories.
Remember, 1lb of fat = 3500 calories. Make sure that you get a decent amount of fiber, a good amount of protein in every meal, and you should remain satisfied til the next meal.
It's a multi-pronged approach.
* calories in must be less than calories burned. THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL.
* eat a balanced diet. take a decent multiple vitamin if you're worried.
* take your desired and realistic weight (if you're 5'7" 150 lbs is realistic) and multiply it by 10. That's your dieting daily consumption.
* get to the gym. 25 to 30 minutes of cardio. then hit the weights. don't use "play weights". you're not going to build a ton of muscle and bulk up like a body builder. I see people just playing on the machines using the absolute minimum weight and not really working hard at all with it. You need to feel a muscle burn at the end of the third set and fight for one more rep.
* work hard on your core (abs, back)
* get a trainer if you don't know how
* stick with it. it's a slow process.
* It requires discipline. How bad do you want it?
I am doing the slowly and surely wins the race way of losing weight a complete lifestyle change none of the things mentioned here. I go to a Healthy Weight Clinic at my Doctors and since July last year I have lost nearly 27kgs to be exact 26.8kgs and all I have been doing is eating healthy and lots of walking and other excercises.
I am living proof it works.
Hi, I was also a victim of ACAI berry AND Bromolite....major rip offs. They ripped me off too to the tune of around $200....didn't know about a thing until I saw my credit card statement. I did get in tough and although I won't get a refund, I made sure they won't be charging me again. Get the name of the person you talk to...someone does eventually come on the phone...and make sure they give you the cancellation numbers. I have since thrown the pills out. There is nothing like a sensible diet and exercise to loose and maintain weight. Trust me....it works!! I am 57 btw.
I find it to be a problenm with people who think like you. If everything from the FDA was so good for us why do we end up with law suits against prescription drug companies? Why do we end up with illnesses from contaminated products approved by the government, like salmonella from peanut butter? Just because the natural, alternative to drugs is not sanctioned by the government doesn't mean it is not good. And besides that the government only looks at what they want not what they need to. For example why do we keep getting poisonous products from china, if anything we should be banning all products from China not the natural herbal healings that the synthetic drugs are based on.
i got burned by ACAI BERRY too - phoned them raging mad and threatened them with fraud charges - my money was refunded on my statement withhin a couple of days - i was amazed!!! you gotta be a bitch with them or they will try to walk all over you, trust me!!! stand up for yourself! they know they are doing a shady thing!! good luck all
i found pgx to be agreat product really helped me slim down. go and look it up it really is as good has it says it is!!
I've been doing a low-carb diet for 3 years now (on and off with seasons), and I lost 50 pounds. I am only eighteen, so a fifteen-year-old thinking an apple will ruin me for a week, is not a good way to live life. I no longer am on the diet. I just eat healthy. I am on cheerleading, and occasionally exercise. AND I'm still at a constant weight! It is possible
I have tried a pill called the Acai Cleanse and I did not really notice any changes, except I had more BM's than normal. I was kind of skeptical abou the pill but, ppl made it sound so tempting and sure because it is supposedly all natural. But, try to eat everyday before 7:00pm and exercise even if it's for 15 or 30 min a day. I just recently quick smoking and have not smoked in four months but, I gained like thiry pounds and this is the heaviest I have ever been.
Has anyone used Optifast or Slim Fast? Did it work or not work for you? Thanks!
The popular 'low carb' diet by dr. A is a no no! Although I lost weight really quickly, I lost it too quickly and ended up with all types of health problems. My menstral cycle would last for 30 days at a time (in women hormone is stored in fat, lose weight too quickly and your body goes berserk) and not having enough carbs caused me to become depressed. Also I gained back double the weight I lost when I reintroduced carbs completely.
I also tried Slim Fast when I was in college. I was always weak and fainted several times - I guess from not enough calories versus my activity level.
I hate gyms but I've decided to join a dance class to help me get more active
I've been heavy for a while. Finally, after years of insisting to doctors that something was wrong, I was diagnosed with PCOS or Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. It causes insulin resistance (sugar isn't properly transported into your cells and stays in your blood), irregular periods, infertility, and weight gain. I'm now on Metformin (a drug used for diabetes but can also treat insulin resistance) and have been seeing a very talented herbalist. Finally the weight is slowly coming off. If the symptoms of PCOS sound familiar to you, tell your doctor!
I recently completed a 21 day cleanse using a program from Standard Process (SP) and was very satisfied. After taking on a sedentary job last yr--trapped in cubicle for 12 hours a day--I gained 20 pounds and consumed mass quantities of coffee & processed food... I was not happy with the results and wanted to get back to my previous happy & healthy self. So, under guidance of a nutritionist I followed SP which focused on all the organic vegies and fruit you care to eat (2X vegies) along with either lentils or brown rice (1-2 servings a day); however, I substituted quinoa--gluten free diet. Gastro Fiber pills for all 3 wks; Herbal "cleanse" pills and for 1st week & "Super Greens" Pills for 2nd week; 2-3 shakes a day (herbs and whey protein, I added an extra scoop of whey for additional protein). Staged in wild salmon/cod and chicken and eggs at end of cleanse.
The result is that I can control my urges for coffee and processed food, I'm exercising, etc. & 15lbs off before Turkey Day and still off!
No didn't lose no weight. Just money!!! They don't work...diet pills...herbal tea ect...try alot of things...garbage...now I changed my eating not called a diet a lifestyle change! Do yoga, strength training and cardio kickboxing...I FEEL GREAT...BIG AND BEAUTIFUL....JUST change all the garbage food for healthy food choice...watch portion sizes...5 small meals...lots of water...exercise...smile...laugh..love who you are!!! Don't forget it takes time to lose weight. I lost over 100 pounds-from 26 to 18 doing it the right way. It took me 12 years to put it on...it take 12 years to take it off. Six years to go...believe to acheive....
Hi Guys
I did the Atkinsin Diet, It worked for me, I lost 20Kg in 6Months. I have picked up about 5-6Kg again, I'm going to try the Jump Start diet from Brendan McCarthy, will keep you update if I lost any thing in 7 day.
Regards
Sharon
I too went on the "Standard Process" Cleansing Diet through my Chiropractor...It was AMAZING!!! I had gained about 40 lbs & was sick as could be in many ways, with all kinds of digestive problems, sleeping problems, fatigue, addictions, etc. After the first 5 days of the program (shakes, supplements, gradual introduction of salads, rice, fish, chicken, etc.), I finally had enough energy to start a walking program & other excercise...Before that I could barely get from the couch to my bed!!! I continued with the program & am happy to say that I have lost all the weight, I needed to, and intend to do the cleansing program every 6 months or so. Also, temporarily quit smoking & drinking (returned to it because of many extreme stresses in my life, but when I do the detox again, know I will have the help I need to put all that behind me again!) I also noticed that many of the physician prescribed medications I was taking were no longer needed! I highly recommend this program esp. under the care of a chiropractor!
I want to loose weight . I have lot of things like, diet , exercise etc but nothing worked. I was about to go for this .. tea which can reduce weight in notime . Thanks a lot for your e-mail which has helped and guided me not to go for all these...
Thank you.
Try the Rosemary Conley Hip and Thigh diet. It's great even if you don't have a lot of weight to loose. It' low fat, but not dangerously.
I ve tried so many diets. Yes the weight goes away quickly and also rturns back so fast when i start eating. I ve learnt the best way to keep the weight away permanently is eating small portions eercisingregularly, skipping late nite meals and thats where ill start from the 1st of Febuary
Several years ago I tried the Chitosan craze. The only other change was reducing the excessive number of sodas a day. I averaged a 5 lb loss per week and in less than 3 months was down 64 lbs. After being sidelined with medical issues I regained it all. Now I can not find a chitosan product that helps. So I went old-fashioned, reduce calories and increase activity. As of this morning I am down 48 lbs in 7 months. I hate veggies so I have to sneak them in like in a no-meat chili recipe I concocted I add a jar or two of baby food, a filling meal with less than 150 cals. You can't taste it since I love to make things really spicy! I add fiber (no taste granulated) to lots of things to increase fullness. Because I am a big girl who is a picky eater I have never been able to follow a standard diet. Look at things you love and tweak it to make it lower in calories and fat.
I still drink 2 full sugar Cokes a day, but I sip them and really enjoy them instead of gulping them down like before. Good luck to all
Anybody have long term success with Nutri Systems? Is the food good?
I have lost 6kg in 4 weeks from 1st January this year. I first tried the induction phase of Atkins, lost 4.8kg in 11 days. I was going well until I realised that all I wanted was carbohydrates!!!!!!! I went on a 2 day binge of carbs and gained back 3.8kg of the 4.8kg. I know that the reason for this is because the "induction" phase is far too severe to stay on for any longer than 2 weeks maximum. So, from the 1/01/09 I upped my carb intake to around 50g per day. Not only has this naturally curbed my "craving for carbs", which makes it easy to stay on it, but I am losing steadily, 1kg per week minimum. I haven't started any exercising yet. It's lovely having bacon and eggs for breakfast, a piece of fruit for morning tea, a ham & salad lo-carb wrap for lunch (with full fat whole egg mayonnaise) and then meat (w creamy sauce) & veges for dinner. Snacks diet jelly and 50g macadamia nuts. This is easy to stay on and it sure is working. Remember, low fat products not only lack flavour but are very high in carbohydrates
I have been on the Acai Berry and Bromalite since Jan. 1, and also trying to eat no more than 1200 calories per day. I am doing this with many small meals or snacks (like lowfat yogurt). I have lost five pounds and I am finally regular (which I had never been in my life). As far as being ripped off...didn't happen. You gotta read the fine print, and call then you get the discounted price on the next order.
hey!! Herbalife is just good enough to be the no 1 lose weight program... seem to be none of you had ever heard it. Go! go! HERBALIFE....
I'm 22 years old. I have tried many different diets since the age of 12, from low-fat, to low-carb, to sugar-free to gluten-free. The low-carb diet, namely Atkins, tampered with my body systems in a very detrimental way. I was on it for approximately 2 yrs; I am still recovering from the carbohydrate intolerance I developed. My digestion is slowly reestablishing itself; I suffer from constipation and have made several trips to the ER because of blockages. I recommend Gillian McKeith's book and television program by the same name: "You Are What You Eat." She is inspiring, thorough and, I've found, consistently accurate! Tell someone close to you that you're in need of support and are embarking on a difficult lifestyle change. Having someone to help you through the challenges and celebrate the progress is essential! Stay away from processed foods and carbonated beverages - they truly hinder success in weight loss goals. Check out her book; it changed my life!
I lost my job for 3 months and the food I ate was fast food, junk food or processed foods at my work. Since I've been home - I clean house and do a little bit of yardwork. And since I couldn't afford fast food and get food stamps, I've been buying organic foods and lean meats and more grains that I lost 25 pounds. The thing is DON'T EAT FAST FOODS - stay away if possible!!!!
hi sharon...seems to me you into dieting for the short term...6months?well forgive me for saying ,but that would not work out too good ...you might gain weight or even more from what youve lost...have you taken up weight training in your programme?it can help keep your body firmer longer..
Here is what works for me. Once I have determined I am going to lose weight and you need to have the right mindset to succeed, I buy Lean Cuisine or Smart Ones and eat those to get used to the correct portion sizes, after 2 wks my stomach has shrunk and I can then eat sensibly, just less and that along with exercise I feel is the best way to do it sensibly
PLEASE - BEWARE of the "claims" made by the Acai berry and cleanse "diet." Acai berry certainly has its health benefits (antioxidant), but I agree that losing that much weight that fast CAN'T be accurate or SAFE!
By the way, if you try the FREE Acai Berry and Cleanse supplements, BEWARE - read the FINE PRINT or you will be charged hundreds of $$ on your credit card for supplies and services you may not be aware you're "signing up" for!
I am 83 years young,i am 125lbs for the last 20 yrs, I eat a samll amount of food every 2 hours, and a decent protein, carbo ,salad for dinner. and a snak at bedtime. I walk evriy day or swim at least 30 minutes. I lived thru the depression, no fat people then do you think it was becasue food was limied to every one in our fmaily. we all lived thru it all 8 of us and we all lived to be 80 and above. stop those crazy outragious stupid diet plans you nuts!!!!!! they are only making those that promote their quick loss is not true!!!you are all making them rich !rich! rich !silly you all. fran
i feel like honestly nothing works. ive been at the gym for months and eating healthy and i have seen no changes. its frustrating, i feel like my body gave up on me and now im starving all the time (which is really just boredom)
any advice you let me knowwww =/
I am currently losing weight and here is what I am doing: First off calorie counting is the key! I try to consume no more than 1500 calories a day. I start my mornings off with Special K, they have new flavors out and I eat the Chocolate kind, its delicious. For lunch i eat anything I want, I just dont overeat. For example I had Burger King 2day! :) For dinner I usually eat homemade chicken salads with fat free dressing! I add grilled chicken, it only takes 10min to make and I usually have a small piece of garlic bread on the side. Between meals I usually enjoy one of those 100 calorie snack packs or a rice cake. Most imporantly I exercise at least 5 times a week. Being a college student my time is valuable but 30-60min on the elliptical or treadmill is a valuable use of my time. This is the simplest thing I know to do in order to lose weight, but its a lifestyle for me not a DIET! I guarantee anyone that tries this will see there waistline shrink tremendously in weeks. Good luck :)
What has really worked for me is HERBALIFE. I've lost more than 60kg(132lbs) on it. The results were slow and steady but whatever I've lost, i've kept it off. What's great is that you are taught to lead a healthy lifestyle (balanced EATING and exercise). I lost this weight over a period of 2 years and I thought I would have flabby skin, but I don't!
I've pretty much read all the comments posted and have a question: after a certain age say - 59, sometimes the thyroid comes into play and can influence how the body metabolizes. My question is: should we be self-medicating or ingesting herbs before we find out what is specifically happening to our bodies especially considering that some of us may already be on prescribed medication?
I'd like to hear more from Fran
hi, im 23 and 10kgs over weight, ive been eating healthly and exercise regurlarily, i bike to n from work 20min, and work i a preschool, i have gained alotta flab just recently, so considering joining the gym,
i also have been inconsistently taking a asain product - green tea supplement called fusion, is this good or bad ??? please help...
I've always known the basic rule(slow and steady wins the day ... ) but refused to accept it. At my worst point I was 5 stone (70lbs, 32kg) overweight ; I lost 2 1/2 stone fairly easily by eating sensibly, then hit a plateau that I couldn't get over even by sensible dieting - so starved the last 35lbs off. Being a "small" dress size felt amazing - what didn't feel so amazing was the constant fatigue, numbing cold (even on hot days), the dizzy spells every time I stood up. But what was worst of all was, because I'd starved the weight off (and therefore driving my body into famine mode) was that I had to keep to a semi-starvation diet to keep the weight off. Of course, I couldn't maintain that kind of a lifestyle indefinitely, and once I increased my calorie intake to a more realistic level, the weight that I had starved off (all 35 lbs of it) went back on as well.
(continued from above)
I'm now losing that 35lbs the proper way - slowly, with the focus on healthy eating and sensible exercise. It will probably take me the whole year, maybe even two, but i don;t care any more - being healthy is more important. And I take care not to weight myself too often - once a month at most. Psychologically it feels a lot better seeing a 2 or 3lb weight loss over the previous month than seeing a loss of only a few ounces ever week (or worse, a gain of 1 or 2 lbs at that time of month!)
In short, what I'm trying to say is that, from my own experience, it's much better in the long term to focus on feeling (and being) healthy and fit and lose the excess pounds slowly, than it is to be desperate to lose and end up ill.
I actually did try the master cleanse and I stopped doing it after about 1 week because I felt hungry all the time!! the drink was disgusting but I didnt feel fatigue at all in fact I felt more energetic.... but anyways I stopped doing that and then I went on weight watchers and I lost about 30 lbs already. My recommendation is to do weight watchers because you eat the right things constantly and your not going to be hungry so weight watchers definitely works!!!
I have tried many ways to lose wieght. I am at a plateau of my own doing. I know exactly how I should be eating and how I should be exercising. One day I eat prpoerly and then the next it is a fast food frenzy or I binge and eat everything in sight. I do exercise 3 - 5 times per week. (No weights yet) I am a firm believer that when I finally choose to lose the weight it will happen. Lets just hope I can maintain until then. I believe it is exactly like quitting any addiction. Lets hope that today is my day.
I have tried the lot, but eventually found AllaboutW8 and lost 6 stones with them over a 6 month period and so far so good, a year later and its stayed off with a pound here and there fluctuating up and down a bit naturally. Its a rapid loss progrsm but they guide you through the whole process of combining foods with the meal replacements they do (actually very nice and a good variety) and then you're with them to maintain weight and healthy lifestyle changes etc for as long as you need it. It does cost but in all honesty its dearer buying junk food, fast food, wine, sodas, chocolate, crisps etc, so I never missed a penny and now I don;t miss the junk. Best thing I ever did but have to advise anyone doing it to remember that maintenance is really important, just as much as losing the weight you have to learn how to keep it off as well. Little changes once you reach target weight is all thats needed but by that time your head ought to be in the right place anyway. Good luck, losing weight is life transforming!
has anyone tried SENSA for dieting. It was offered by HSN, and is a salt/sugar "substitute" that is sprinkled on your food before eating.
I too have struggled with my weight until about 2 weeks ago when I decided. NO MORE!
I spent 7 days on The Cabbage Soup Diet. Lost 10 pounds. Came off for 24 hours and started a Low Fat, no fried foods, no Pastas,no sodas. I use Splenda now and I've lost an additional 5 pounds on my own! I bought an Elliptical and now the Husband is getting involved. I think I just needed that Cabbage Soup Diet to boost my metabolism and my will power!

FDA Issues Dietary Supplements Final Rule
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a final rule establishing regulations to require current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) for dietary supplements. The rule ensures that dietary supplements are produced in a quality manner, do not contain contaminants or impurities, and are accurately labeled.
"This rule helps to ensure the quality of dietary supplements so that consumers can be confident that the products they purchase contain what is on the label,"
You know you have to do what is right for you. Diet and Exercise are huge keys but no one can eat perfectly and proper supplementation works nicely. I have been on AdvoCare for over a year and feel great. Read up on it at www.advocare.com/08051464
A low carb diet ( 2 weeks) alternated with 2 weeks of a normal 1200-1500 low fat diet WILL break your craving for carbs but you have to get through that first 2 weeks. A nutritionist had me do a 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off of low carb. The 2 low carb weeks were 15g of carbohydrate at breakfast, lean protein, and then 4-5 oz of lean protein and unlimited nonstarchy vegetables (green beans, broccoli, salad, cabbage, cauliflour, etc.) at each meal with 2 snacks, one mid morning, and one mid afternoon. I also walked on a treadmill 30 minutes a day. Alternate normal weeks you would eat 1 serving carboyhydrates( 15 g), 1 serving protein (4-5 oz) and 2 servings None starchy vegetables. I lost the 20 lbs pretty easily but the best benefit was LOSING THE CARB CRAVING and ease of controlling control portion sizes. If you cannot do this, I would recommend eating only a low fat serving of carbohydrates ( REMEMBER - A good serving rule is the size of your PALM OF YOUR HAND! or 15 g carboyhdrates)
this are really very useful and thought provoking post to maintain your health.

Just eat 1/2 of what you normally eat at every meal! You'll lose weight if you stick with it. I've lost over 100 lbs and have kept it off for over 5 yrs doing just that!!!!
What has worked for me - 65 lbs lost and maintained for almost 2 years - is accepting that it is not a diet, but rather a lifestyle. Yep, it's cliche but it is the truth. I first had to change my thinking of what is going in my body and am I doing enough exercise to use that food efficiently. It can be done and I agree that slow and steady wins the race. I still have 30 lbs left to lose and it feels great knowing that what I've learned about myself will accomplish the last 30 and the weight (95 total) will stay off for good.
I buy Acai products at Whole Foods. There's a package of three bars in the frozen food section that you can eat as-is or can use in a smoothie/protein shake, and there's no chance of being ripped off. I used to drink about six cups of coffee per day, but I've replaced four of them with green tea. Also, by using fats that contain medium-chain triglycerides - which burn up much more quickly - such as avocados, olive oil and coconut oil (looks like shortening, but melts instantly and tastes fabulous,) I feel full longer, and my skin and hair love it! I also don't use any artificial sweeteners, which I believe are deadly. There are enough choices between stevia, agave and honey that no one should choose the chemical route. One last note - sodas, whether regular or diet - wreck your body and your teeth.
One last note. Almost everyone dislikes exercise, but it's crucial for a better life - for right now, and as you age. Flexibility is the key to living longer, and being able to maintain your independence. A sedentary lifestyle leads to a decrepit old age. Who wants to be at the mercy of the nursing home staff??? Not me!! It sounds boring, but just walk for 30 minutes each day. The fresh air (oxygen) speeds fat burning, and your joints will start to work better almost instantly - if you can get past the first two-to-three days of stiffness. It's also easier if you walk with someone else. You'll probably see people walking around the neighborhood that you could join. You could even start a neighborhood walking group that would include some of the elderly people that otherwise would just sit in their homes. Even if you went door-to-door on just your street, I'll bet you could find at least two people that want to walk, and it's more likely you'll stick with it if you have new friends that ou don't want to let down by quitting. Every day above ground is a good one that can be made even better by devoting just 30-60 minutes to yourself.

In many years I've tried nearly every diet plan and have had some disasterous results from different diet pills.
My head knows all the diet rules but my mouth paid no attention, so over the years my weight has fluctuated a lot. WeightWatchers and DietWatchers are good as long as you're on the program but my weight always returned later. Now I have discovered NutriSystem, and what a relief it is to have my meals planned and ready for me, and the food tastes good! I eat large salads for fiber and volume, so I am happily fed,
and my weight is coming off comfortably.
Hoorah for NutriSystem.
TJ - Congrats on losing 235 lbs. so far, but you need to know what you're doing to your body. I speak from experience, by the way, as I dropped from 262 to 120 in eight months by eating nothing but lettuce. Bounced up and down by 50 lbs. for the next 10 years, and then starved off 60 lbs. in six weeks. I looked good on the outside only. The prolonged starving left me with heart and kidney issues, because the body is going to use protein whether you're providing it or not. If you're just eating sugar and salt - which is exactly what Gatorade is - then you're overtaxing all of your organs at the same time that your body is consuming them. I know that you finally reached a place where you knew it was time, but you're killing yourself at this very moment. Please add some lean protein (an egg, some chicken breast or salmon) in the morning and at lunch - even if it's just three small bites. You'll still lose. TJ, if you don't eat any protein, your skin will drape on your bones like a worn-out sheet, because it can't renew itself without new protein - not the protein that it's taking from your organs. If you continue to not eat, you are setting yourself up for heart and kidney failure, and you will destroy your liver and your brain. Your brain and liver actually need cholesterol to function, and once your brain stops or your heart stops, you're dead. I do understand, TJ, because I've been there, and the elation that you feel as the weight falls off will be replaced with despair if you wind up in the hospital. Starting today, just add a little bit of protein and maybe some no-cal vegetables - and you can continue to lose like you want. Then, you'll be alive but not on machines that are functioning for your heart, lungs or kidneys. God Bless you, TJ, and I hope you feel the love and take my advice.
The only thing that works is a life style CHANGE. The way one relates to food. I am a size zero.
I am the same size as when I was 14 (I am 59).
I have had three children.
I have always used the 'Calvin' test...if my jeans are too tight, I stop eating until they fit. I will use a 'washout' and a fast.
Most people take every hunger pang as imminent death, have no self control, and seem oblivious to the fact they go from a 2 to a 4 to a 6....
first off, anorexia IS NOT A CHOICE. its not something people do because theyve given up. i have borderline eating disorder and i developed it AFTER i lost a bunch of weight. and second, if you want to be healthy and fit just eat a vegetarian or vegan diet. it may be hard but the health benefits are incredible if you replace animal fat with veggies and such. i am a vegetarian and i know that by keeping up my diet (which doesnt feel like a diet at all, believe me!) and excersize ill never be obese and ill live a long happy compassionate life!
Anorexia is most certainly a choice! All humans have an innate need to eat; therefore, to not eat - if food is available - is a choice. People choose anorexia for a myriad of reasons, one of which - of course - is that nothing else seems to have worked for them to lose weight in the past. Additionally, there are some incredibly unfit and unhealthy vegetarians and vegans, particularly because they don't spend the time to investigate which nutrients are missing from their diets as a result of eschewing nutritionally-rich sources of protein. Not everyone eats soy because of the high probability that it has been genetically modified.

Hey everyone!
Years ago I did Atkins for 7 weeks (cheating every Saturday) I lost 20 kgs and had HEAPS of energy - kept it off until many years later. You are not Supposed to stay on it for more than 2 weeks at a time. But it WORKS! Do not, repeat, Do NOT drink diet drinks - almost killed me and I am writing a book about them . Likewise don't use diet yoghurt, chewing gum or anything else with aspartame, phenylalanine etc in it and read dorway.com and sweetpoison.com - a real eye-opener

Im diabetic so certain weight loss habits are worse for me than a normal non-diabetic. Im only 19 and have had it for 10 years. The way I see it, the only safe natural effective way to lose weight is healthy eating and exercise. Limit yourself with how much you eat but make it enough to be full for more than an hour. All I do is measure my food, exercise and watch what I eat. Yea sometimes ya break the routine and satisfy yer taste buds with junk but once ina while is ok. Lots of veggies and fruit. Plus...a secret many people donno is...mushroom tea. I no it sounds weird but im redneck back woods type so my dad grows mushrooms and makes tea. Theres certain ones that do different things. Some work for things such as blood sugar, helps lungs, energy, stress, headaches, and stuff like that. He has a book all about them. You should look into it. Kearsten (Beech Creek, PA)

Try the Flat Belly Diet. I just came off the 4 day anti-bloat jumpstart portion of it and I lost 7.5 pounds . In four days! Yes,most of it is water weight, and that is exactly what the jumpstart is supposed to do. This morning I started the actual "diet" part which allows real food and real fats-as long as they are monounsaturated. In other words, the fat found in olives, olive oil, nuts, etc.is not bad for you. At any rate there is portion control and you will ,of course, have to give up some things, but I can't wait to see what I've lost in a month! Oh yeah, they say you don't have to exercise, but I did anyway and I recommend it to anyone trying to lose weight.
Exercise is the way to make ur muscles strong and toned. Reduction of weight is automatic because to do exercise you have to be on the lower side of the weight & so automatically u will be taking less of diet. Selection of diet is very important that is stimulants like tea, coffee. High fibre raw diet to make u full & causing less stress on ur GI & other systems of the body. Frequent small meals with less of oils fats & carbohydrates & rich in proteins ( germinating pulses with citrus fruits & lemon). Always remain alert & don't sleep much but relax for smaller times to rejuvenate ur body systems make u healthy slim man .

Thanks very much for this article! I wish I would've taken the steps of becoming an "iformed consumer" before I took this Herbalife tea that helps you loose weight. I know it works b/c for some people it has, I've seen it, but on my fourth day of the plan they put me on I had a seizure. As I researched to see if anyone on a dietary supplement had a similar case I found several which lead me to believe that it wasnt a coincidence! I think I am one of those that are buildt to react a certain way! My judgement was clouded b/c the distributor is my friend and she kept blabbing about it being "organic" but if you think about it just b/c people swear that something is "organic" doesnt mean it does your body good! Snake venom is "organic" but lethal! Think about that next time...
im curious to know if anybody has tried the celebrithy diet shakes
For me, I would just stay away from weight loss surgery and diet pills as i feel that these may have a bigger risk compared to diets or weight loss programs. Eating right and exercising consistently is one of the best way to lose weight quickly.
Hi, tomorrow (Friday 4/17) I will have been on a lifestyle change (and I say that because that's truly the way one needs to think of it) for three weeks now. I am down 13 pounds. I did consult my doctor and personal trainer before starting this.
I make sure that I eat every three hours and each meal/snack has a portioned amount (4-5 ounces)of lean fresh protein (chicken, fish, white turkey meat, ceter cut pork chops) in it.
I haven't eliminated my carbs, but I will say that I am more aware of which ones I am eating and when I eat them. I don't eat any carbs after 4 and I have limited myself to brown rice (only 1/2 cup at lunch on occasion), small red potatoes (only one at lunch on occasion), and whole grain bread (two slices a day on occasion).
I don't skip breakfast anymore... cheerios (recommended portion size)or oatmeal (again portions) and some sort of lean protein (egg beaters, low-fat cottage cheese, etc.)
I have pretty much eliminated that cup of coffee in the morning and if I absolutely have to have it, only one cup. No more sodas or other "bad" beverages during the day, only water, water, water, and did I say water?
I have found myself loving fresh fruits and veggies (more veggies than fruit intake) and crave fish, shrimp and chicken.
And I never eat after 8 PM. I have also started doing 30-45 mins on my treadmill. I hope that this helps anyone that reads this.
Get active. If you have a tread mill try watching tv while speed walking or working up a sweat. Try doing 30 push ups in between commercial breaks, keep your body guessing and keep your body stressing!
