Secret Dieting: Do You Have "Food Frenemies"?

The idea of dieting in secret is a topic that strikes a very familiar nerve with everyone. According to our recent iVillage poll, about 2/3 of responders didn't tell anyone that they were "on a diet". They were dieting in secret. With all we hear about diet buddies, and group support, why is this such a popular trend?

Watch the segment from TODAY

This doesn't surprise me at all! When people announce they are on a diet, this adds a lot of invisible pressure to succeed. Plus, there's a lot of pressure that others feel, to do the same - whether they want to or not. That's what I call "food frenemies". When you announce that you're trying to lose weight, your friends automatically feel they should be doing the same, even though this may not true at all, and they feel guilty about it. Often, this is translated into diet sabotage for you and an effort to try to get you to eat more! I'm sure you've heard it all. Here are some of the more popular responses from these food frenemies:

C'mon, you've been working so hard on your diet, you should reward yourself right now!

Oh, you don't need to lose any weight; you're perfect the way you are. Don't go on a diet!

A salad isn't enough for you. Get something else, too.

We'll just share everything - that will keep you on track and won't spoil your diet.

Sound familiar? It's hard to fight back, but once you recognize this pattern, you can empower yourself, and not be bothered by food frenemy talk!

There's also a flip side of secret dieting, which is a real positive, in my book. What I mean is the ability to make small changes at each meal, silently with "mental notes", to save calories and stay on track. No need to announce or share your actions with anyone buy yourself! This is a very successful strategy, that avoids a lot of "diet-talk" at mealtimes.

A successful diet plan begins and ends with you! When you are confident and empowered, you have the confidence to rely on yourself for diet guidance.

Have your food frenemies made you a secret dieter? How to you deal with them? I'd love to know!

This is a bunch.....Why are we making t.v. segments that are telling people 'hey its ok other people do it too'. Why waste our breath on the problem. You know what I do? Surround myself with the loves of my life and then tell them how I am going to treat my body according to what is right for me. If I am not hurting myself they should appreciate my choice. If they don't support right away don't give up. Do you want the family and friends you spend yours day loving looking at you as weak....stand up show them your not. But here's the thing. Don't actually care. It truly is for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not saying be mean when my boyfriend doesn't support a decision right away, I laugh and do it anyway because I feel it is for the good of me, and I do things that are for the good of us as well. Its a balance and you'll never get anywhere pretending. The world is full of phonies and every choice puts our lives on a different road so lets start with the road to truth.

The modern obsession with a thin body is another problem that women face now a days. Women try everything in order to get this extra pounds off, things like pills, patches, diet, hunger, exercises and all kind of weight loss products. Some of them work, but others - not.

Weight loss industry is focusing on the way people should feel while doing it, in order to achieve better results and stay healthy all the time. Being healthy and thin is not a dream, it should be something, that is a reasonable and easy to be done.

People do the same thing to "friends" who are trying to kick an addiction. "Just one drink won't hurt", "C'mon, you took a hit off that joint before", "Out of cigs? Here, have one of mine". Sometimes it's not just your eating/drinking/drugging habits that have to change in order for you to change.

If that is what all your freinds acn say to you "one bite won't kill you" instead of " i'm happy/proud of you that you want to make yourself healthier maybe I should join you!" then maybe you should consider a circle of freinds that will bring you up instead of down. Maybe they helped you get to where you are now and are you happy with yourself?
